How Does Loft Insulation Work?

Hot air rises and is replaced with much cooler air, if the heat rises and there is nothing to trap it it escapes. Loft insulation roll keeps the warm air in. If heat and does not escape through the roof, then the trapped heat is better circulated throughout the house. Insulation a loft makes it much more difficult for heat to sip through your roof by providing a layer of material which has lots of air pockets in it trapping heat and cutting what is known as the U value of the loft. This is how to insulate a loft.

The U value is measured by how quickly heat is lost; so the lower the U value, the less energy you need to keep your home warm. Loft insulation will reduced your U value from around 2.5, for an un-insulated loft to 0.16 W/m2K, a 95% reduction.

An R value is a measure of thermal resistance and is the inverse of a U value, a high R value is better for your home. The National Insulation Association recommend lofts should be insulated to an R value of between 6.1 and 7 Km2/W.
